AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER
(ASD) is a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. Studies suggest that ASD could be a result of disruptions in normal brain growth very early in development. These disruptions may be the result of defects in genes that control brain development and regulate how brain cells communicate with each other. People with ASD often have problems with social communication and interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention, which can make life very challenging. Some are very high functioning and can go to college, live on their own, have jobs and get married and have families. Some can live and work on their own with some assistance. BUT so many are not so lucky!!!! So many autistic young adults need 24-hour caregiver services!!!
Parents whose children were among the first wave diagnosed with autism are confronting new challenges for their kids' adulthood. We will be faced with 200,000 autistic kids who will age out of the school system over the next 5 years (according to one estimate). A large percentage of the young adults will need a forever home to move to, for one reason or another.
